Follow the conference on X #DeterioratingPatient
This conference focuses on recognising & responding to the deteriorating patient and ensuring best practice in the use of NEWS2. The conference will include National Developments including recommendations on NEWS2, the 2024 Sepsis Guidance and implementation of Martha’s Rule. The conference will also include reflections on implementing the recommendations from the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch Report Investigation into recognising and responding to critically unwell patients.
With split streams focusing on deteriorating in hospitals, or deterioration in primary and community care the conference will include practical case study based sessions on identifying patients at risk of deterioration, improving practice in patient observations, the role of human factors in responding to the deteriorating patient, understanding success factors in escalation, sepsis & Covid-19, involving patients and families in recognising deterioration, using clinical judgement, and improving the communication and use of NEWS2 in the community, including care homes, and at the interface of care.
The conference will update delegates on the practical implementation of Martha’s Rule
“The head of the NHS has today announced the rollout of ‘Martha’s Rule’ in hospitals across England from April, enabling patients and families to seek an urgent review if their condition deteriorates… This escalation process will be available 24/7 to patients, families and NHS staff, and will be advertised throughout hospitals, making it quickly and easily accessible.”
NHS England 21st February 2024
The conference will also discuss the new approach to managing acute physical deterioration through the prevention, identification, escalation, response – PIER approach which is being implemented across ICBS from Summer 2024
“To ensure that Martha’s Rule is effective, it will be implemented alongside an integrated programme to improve the management of deterioration using ‘PIER’ resources, which helps systems to prevent, identify, escalate and respond to physical deterioration. The new PIER approach views deterioration as a whole pathway which is supported by systems rather than only advocating a single strategy for identification. The new PIER approach will enable the effective management of acute physical deterioration in health and care and will apply to all conditions, clinical settings and specialities.”
