“Child and adolescent eating disorder services have never achieved NHS waiting time targets, and are not able to meet significant demand… even children who meet the threshold for specialist eating disorder services are often in physical and mental health crisis by the time they are seen. Delays in treatment cause children with eating disorders physical and mental harm… there is an unacceptable gap between the number of children being referred to specialist eating disorders services, and those being seen”
Royal College of Psychiatrists February 2024
This conference focuses on Eating Disorders: improving access, treatment and recovery outcomes, and meeting the national standards for children, young people and adults. There is focus on early intervention and effective management including meeting the national guidance on Managing Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders.
“The number of children and adults struggling with eating disorders has reached record levels in recent years and it’s concerning to see rates rising so rapidly. Early intervention often prevents people from developing more severe symptoms and research shows that recovery is achievable for people with an eating disorder of any duration, including disorders of many years.”
Dr Ashish Kumar, Chairman, Royal College of Psychiatrists’ eating disorders faculty, February 2024
The conference will also update delegates on best practice and challenges in Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) following evidence of increased referrals
“We cannot carry on like this. Prevention is better than cure – it is high time that we provide preventative care for children who are showing signs of a problematic relationship with food.”
Dr Ashish Kumar, Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Eating Disorders Faculty, February 2024
