The day will cover learning from lived experiences and organisations that have improved services, challenging stigmatisation, early intervention and prevention, adherence to the NICE Quality Standard for Co-occuring Severe Mental Health and Substance Misuse and implementing the update to the Quality Standard for Alcohol-use Disorders, effective assessment, assertive outreach and there will be specific case studies on making dual diagnosis services accessible and supporting people who are homeless.
“The National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Safety in Mental Health (NCISH) has published a report on suicide by people in contact with drug and alcohol services in England and Wales, based on deaths registered between 1 October 2021 and 30 September 2022. The report found that 428 people died by suicide within 12 months of contact with drug and alcohol services during the study period, 8% of all suicide deaths. ”

“We are seeing an increase in patients with very complex needs. People with a dual diagnosis might have experienced trauma in their lives and some may use substances to address this. It’s important that we recognise the trauma they’ve experienced, and approach their needs in a sensitive and meaningful way. To do so, we need to have a complete picture of someone’s life, understanding what’s happened to them, who they are as a person and what’s important to them. We can then work alongside colleagues to put appropriate interventions in place. We can also liaise with recovery services to ensure people get purposeful and recovery focused support.”
Victoria Barry, Dual Diagnosis Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, 2024
The conference will also focus on implementing the recent NICE Update to Quality Standard Alcohol-use disorders: Diagnosis and Management:
“Alcohol dependence affects 4% of people aged between 16 and 65 in England… We’ve updated our quality standard on alcohol-use disorders: diagnosis and management… Our new quality statements focus on 5 key areas: the use of validated alcohol questionnaires, community support networks and self-help groups, triage assessment in specialist alcohol services, acute alcohol withdrawal, and interventions to prevent relapse after unplanned withdrawal from alcohol in hospital. ”
