The conference will include practical case study based sessions on identifying patients at risk of deterioration, improving practice in patient observations, the role of human factors in responding to the deteriorating patient, improving escalation and understanding success factors in escalation, involving patients and families in recognising deterioration, using clinical judgement, and improving the communication and use of NEWS2 in primary care, the community including care homes, and at the interface of care.
“Sudden acute deterioration in health can occur as a result of a wide variety of causes across all systems. This includes infection, cardiovascular issues, haemorrhage and embolism amongst others. These high-consequence pathological conditions can present in the community. It is important that they are recognised and managed appropriately in general practice.”
RCGP
There is also a focus on the nursing role in recognising and managing deteriorating patients in care homes and the community
“Staff shortages could put identifying deterioration at risk, but with the stakes so high, it is important to ensure that patients are monitored effectively”
Nursing Standard January 2023
“To ensure that Martha’s Rule is effective, it will be implemented alongside an integrated programme to improve the management of deterioration using ‘PIER’ resources, which helps systems to prevent, identify, escalate and respond to physical deterioration. The new PIER approach views deterioration as a whole pathway which is supported by systems rather than only advocating a single strategy for identification. The new PIER approach will enable the effective management of acute physical deterioration in health and care and will apply to all conditions, clinical settings and specialities.”
