“Complaints have doubled, and clinical negligence claims are at record levels. There is much work to be done if quality of care is to become the organising principle of the NHS once more.”
Lord Darzi, Independent Investigation of the National Health Service in England, Department of Health & Social Care, November 2024
In this conference we will look at the factors contributing to record high clinical negligence claims as well as new initiatives and schemes being implemented to improve quality of care and reduce the need for patients to make claims and litigate.
“The number of clinical claims resolved in 2023/24 was 13,382, compared to 13,552 in 2022/23. The total number of new clinical negligence claims and reported incidents in 2023/24 totalled 13,784, an increase of 273 on 2022/23 (13,511).”
NHS Resolution, July 2024
“It is extremely concerning that the costs being paid out in clinical negligence claims continue to rise each year. This is money that could be invested into NHS services for the benefit of all patients.”
Dr Michaell Devlin, Head of Professional Standards and Liaison, The MDU, July 2024
“The NHS paid out record sums in damages and legal costs for alleged mistakes and negligence by medical professionals last year. In 2023/24, the cost of settling clinical negligence claims increased to £2.8bn from £2.7bn the previous year. Half the costs were associated with poor maternity care, an annual report from the health service’s legal authority revealed.”
The Independent, July 2024
